Creating Space for Art In the Summer

I love summer although I’m not a fan of the hot, hot days anymore. I used to bake myself in the sun in my younger days (with no sunscreen….eeeks) and loved it. Nowadays, I own a beach umbrella and always have sunscreen handy. But I still love the warm air and the ability to wear shorts and flip flops. And, swimming in the ocean, lakes or rivers is a special joy. Its also a busy time of year although we often think of it as vacation time, relaxing in a patio lounger, cold drink in hand, etc. But I’m finding it hard to fit in art time between gardening (and this year the weeds are Godzilla-like!), hiking, kayaking, cycling and camping. I know. My life sounds terrible right? I’m not complaining for sure. I really just want to keep being creative as many days a week as I can. Making art brings me joy and peace. Its exciting and engrossing and always a challenge. Ian says I’ve got myself a new job. And that’s partly true in that it occupies my time but the pay sucks! LOL.

One of the things I’ve been doing this summer is taking a small box of art supplies with me when I go camping. Such inspiration in the forest or on the beach. Ive also been dabbling in water colour paints which are easy to tote around. I’ll be taking part in a Plein Air ‘race’ in Qualicum Beach in August. A bit nerve wracking because basically I’ll be given a location and 3 hours to ‘represent’ in paint the location you are assigned. Apparently there will be tons of spectators out and about. The paintings are then hung in The Old Schoolhouse Gallery for September and October. It’ll be a nail-biter for me as a first timer in something like this. Featured Art This Week

Thought I’d share one of my latest pieces with you. I’m getting ready for a show where ‘teams’ have been paired up, an artist and a photographer. The photographer I’m working with loves photographing underwater images and they are beautiful. This inspired me to explore similar themes and we’ve tentatively agreed on a theme called ‘below the surface’. I’m pretty excited about this. Here’s one of my paintings I think I’ll use for the show:

The Mantle

The Mantle

Layers below our feet
Solid
Stratified
Complicated
Like memories
Only seismically detected
Below the surface.

Etc…

Ive sold a few pieces lately which is always exciting. The most recent was Chocolate Love sold from the Federation of Canadian Artists gallery on Granville Island. Its new home is somewhere in Pennsylvania!

Art Cards

Did I mention that I’m having a bit of a sale on my current collection of art cards? Yup. I’m reducing the prices and if you buy 5, I’ll include free shipping and there will be another 10% off. I want to make room for some newly designed cards. All of my cards are reproductions of my original art. They are blank inside and of course come with an envelope. Message me for more info. I haven’t quite gotten to my shop to edit the new prices so its always worth connecting with me prior to buying anything through my art shop. https://elainesspace.com/shop/

Happy and peaceful summer all!
