Making Art as a Series; Exploring ideas.

Hello from Courtenay on Vancouver Island! Well, we are hurtling quickly into the Fall with cooler, damper weather, leaves falling and folks firing up their woodstoves (cough!). And the increasing darkness. By winter we wake up with the dark and by 5 pm its dark again.

Here are a few of my favourite trees in their Fall colours just around the corner from my house.

I love the colours. Makes for great dog walking scenery.

Lately I’ve been preparing to enter a couple of more art shows. Its a lot of work and I’m trying not to put pressure on myself; after all I am retired and I don’t want the business of the showing and selling my art to be a buzzkill on my creative mojo!

The really fun and intriguing stuff I’ve been doing lately has been working on a series. So far I’ve got 8 paintings as part of a theme I’m exploring. I’m calling it the “Life; boat series” As an abstracted series of paintings I’m using the small boat and the river as an expression of the ‘passing’ of people as they leave their mortal coil on this Earth. It started from being inspired by some photos I took while camping at the Nanaimo River estuary. The colours and views were beautiful and there was this one small rowboat moored close by which really enhanced the scene. So aside from the colours and views I’ve also been influenced this year by the passing of both my parents and a close friend which got me thinking about the journey of people’s passing. Mostly I don’t have strong feelings and have no idea what happens after death although I do hope to be some excellent fertilizer for a lovely tree or rosebush. My hope is that every viewer of my paintings will interpret them to suit their personal stories and beliefs.

Anyway check out the little gallery that follows. I thought I would give you a sneak preview of the series so far. They aren’t quite finished. (A whole other topic! How to know when you are finished?)

These will all be available soon. I hope you enjoy looking at them.

Cheers until next time and keep being creative in whatever way you love. xo Elaine
